Many believers spend a large part of our lives – especially in our 20s and 30s – trying to figure out what God would have of us.
We wrestle with the questions like: What should I do? Who should I marry? Where should I live?
Some of us end up wondering if God even really has a say or preference in any of these things.
But the truth is…He does.
He cares about each and every one of those decisions. And He wants to be the center of every decision we make.
God doesn’t just want to be a small part of our lives, He wants all of our lives.
So then, if we are living to pursue His best for us, how do we determine what that is?
The problem with our modern way of thinking is that we believe God’s best for us is always aligned with what the world says is best for us.
Often times we think that God’s best for us is a new house or a better boss or more comfortable circumstances.
But the truth is, comfortable circumstances have never made anyone stronger. They’ve never made anyone reach out for help or depend on something bigger than themselves.
The things the world says are best for us are actually the very things the enemy uses to make us think our lives are about “ME”. And comfort and easy living.
But God wants better for us.
He wants the best for us.
And He knows that what’s best for us is not our comfort or ourselves or the desires of our flesh.
He knows that when we get so caught up in seeking comfort for ourselves that we begin think we know what’s best. So we end up doing all these things to get what we want only to still find ourselves unfulfilled, anxious, and empty.
We work 70+ hours a week to get a promotion that won’t fulfill us.
We give ourselves away too soon to a man who won’t complete us.
And we numb our pain and depression with meds and drinks and drugs that won’t heal us.
“There is a way that seems right to man but in the end it leads to death.” Proverbs 16:25
But there is such GOOD NEWS.
Even if we’ve gotten distracted and chased all those empty pleasures, our God still made a way for us.
And His best is so much better for us.
God’s best for us isn’t a spouse, a dream job, or a better life. God’s best for us is himself.
So my question for us is, what are we after?
Are we after OUR best for us?
Or are we asking God to show us HIS best for us?
There have been many times in the past when I have chased hard after what I thought was best for me and things have not gone well.
But if we seek HIM FIRST, He will show us the way.
If we ask Him to open our hearts and minds to His provision, His promises, and His glory, He will satisfy us more than any dream job, spouse, or perfect family every would.
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Dig deep into His word. Come to Him in prayer. Surround yourself by the body of Christ (His church). Seek to worship Him in every moment of your day. And I can promise you, you will come to see:
God’s best for you is Himself.
Rest in Him.
